What is the Meaning of the Owl as a Symbol?

The owl is a fascinating symbol with rich and varied meanings, holding a special place in the mythologies and beliefs of cultures around the world. Throughout time, the owl has been revered and respected for its multiple symbolic associations, ranging from wisdom and knowledge to prosperity and good fortune.

Ancient Greece: The Owl and the Goddess Athena

In Ancient Greece, the owl was associated with the goddess Athena, the protector of the city of Athens and the personification of wisdom. Athena was often depicted with an owl by her side, symbolizing clarity of mind and the ability to see the truth beyond appearances. Thus, the owl became an emblem of discernment and divine wisdom.

The Owl in Hindu Mythology

For Hindus, the owl symbolizes prosperity, wisdom, and good luck, being associated with the goddess Lakshmi, the deity who governs wealth and abundance. The presence of the owl beside goddess Lakshmi emphasizes its protective role and its power to bring good fortune to those who worship her.

Chinese Philosophy: The Owl and Prosperity

In ancient Chinese philosophy, the owl represents a powerful totem for attracting prosperity and abundance. The Chinese regard it as a symbol of good fortune and positive energies, protecting against negative influences. This connotation has endured through the centuries, being embraced in Feng Shui practices as well.

The Owl in Celtic Folklore

In Celtic folklore, the owl was revered for its sacredness and mystery. The Celts honored the owl for its reputation of possessing supernatural powers, believing that it could access hidden secrets and ancient wisdom. This deep respect for the owl as a symbol of magic and the supernatural has shaped the Celtic perception of nature and protective spirits.

The Owl in Feng Shui

In Feng Shui, the owl is a symbol of good luck, wisdom, knowledge, and protective energies. When placed correctly, the owl can attract prosperity and success while also shielding the space from negative influences.

The Owl in Modern Times

This powerful symbolism has carried into modern times, with the owl continuing to be viewed as an emblem of knowledge and intelligence. In various contemporary cultures, the owl often appears in literature, art, and spiritual traditions as a symbol of wisdom and truth.

A Fascinating Explanation from The Etheric Crystal written by Radu Cinamar

An interesting explanation of this symbol can be found in the book The Etheric Crystal, written by Radu Cinamar. Here’s what is mentioned in the book:

“In ancient cultures and even in modern esotericism, the owl is the symbol of wisdom. In reality, the fact that the respective symbol has the stylized appearance of an owl when viewed from the front led to its association with this bird. In fact, the graphic representation is composed of several forms derived from different structures.

The symbol represents the eternal manifestation of God (the straight horizontal line), which conveys knowledge at different moments in the past, present, and future, symbolized by the three vertical lines. The three temporal dimensions are perceived in a balanced way by a being who can see both the past and the future (the two circles), which are united into a single manifestation in the present (the middle vertical line is longer).

There is also a simpler version of the “owl” symbol, which represents the eternal manifestation of God that directly conveys knowledge (the vertical line). This situation corresponds to a reality accessible only to a small number of human beings because they must possess high virtues and spiritual powers, allowing them to observe the past and the future in a balanced manner (the two circles), uniting them into a single manifestation (the one in the present – the vertical line is in the middle).

It is not by chance that these qualities are correlated with a correct and balanced vision of relative time (the past and the future), symbolized by the two circles resembling two large, round eyes. On the other hand, this is also related to the appearance of the owl, considered an animal with great visual acuity, which extends into the night. Here, the night is considered the “night of consciousness,” meaning ignorance, illusion, that which covers the truth. The ability to see at night symbolizes the penetrating power of consciousness beyond the deceptive veils of illusion (in which time plays an important role), managing to make the truth shine through. This is the essence of the owl symbol.”

The owl, therefore, continues to captivate the imagination of people, being a complex symbol full of multiple meanings that transcend cultural and temporal boundaries.
